Gas or wood for a garden fire?

Compare outdoor fire options and the installation questions to take to a specialist.

A garden fire feature changes how an outdoor seating area is used. Gas and wood offer different experiences, but the decision should start with the space, the specific appliance and how much attention you want to give it.

Neither option should be chosen on appearance alone. A compact garden, nearby doors and windows, fences, overhead cover and neighbours can all influence whether a feature is suitable.

Plan the seating around the appliance

Choose the appliance before fixing the seating layout. Its instructions determine the clearances, ventilation and suitable surfaces. Do not assume that a gas model can sit closer to furniture or under a cover because it produces less visible smoke.

Gas Networks Ireland advises that outdoor fuel-burning equipment must not be used indoors or under cover. Read its outdoor equipment safety advice and the instructions for the particular product before planning its position.

Allow a clear route around the seating and consider how children and pets move through the garden. An ordinary garden bench and a fire feature are separate design decisions; a seating arrangement that works without a fire may not provide the required space around one.

Compare the complete cost

Ask for current prices for the appliance, installation, supply arrangements, surrounding ground works and ongoing care. The cost of the appliance alone will not describe the whole project. Fuel prices, usage and the chosen model also make generic annual running-cost figures unreliable.

For natural gas appliance or pipework installation, use a Registered Gas Installer. Discuss specialist work before agreeing the landscaping scope.

Safety information

Use Gas Networks Ireland’s guidance on outdoor fuel-burning equipment alongside the appliance manufacturer’s current instructions. Follow the specified weather restrictions and clearances. A general garden guide is not an installation specification.
